Jack Naudi (my language helper) and I went for a walk to see some villages to our north on Monday, July 6. On the way, we met this old lady (Nkiru—pronounced “n-key-due”) sitting on the side of the trail. I greeted her in the Kamea language, and she lit up (having one of the white people talk to you is a treat for the older folks). She gave Jack and me some nuts to eat, and as we turned away, I talked to Jack about him witnessing to her. He went right to it! She needed some medicine but is too weak to walk to the mission station clinic, so we headed back to get medicine from Selina and for Jack to get his Pidgin Bible (someday we’ll have a Kamea one!).
When we returned, she had made it home so we visited her and some of her family in the hut. Jack again began his witness, and God truly blessed. He translated all the Pidgin Bible verses into Kamea for her and I wish you all could have seen her reactions. She was very expressive, especially when Jack showed her that she was a sinner in God’s eyes. I think she actually blushed! It was as if she believed we knew secrets about her past. Then when Jack described the lake of fire (Rev. 20:15), she drew back as if she were sitting on the edge.
Soon Jack was leading her to ask Christ to save her. It was so precious, and I was so glad to be a small part of it! In the picture are Nkiru, a child, Nkiru’s niece Elisabeth (holding her little child), her son Kikindo, and Brother Jack (if Nkiru looks like she isn’t happy, it’s because she never had her picture taken—after I took it and showed it to her, her joy returned!). Elisabeth got saved and baptized at the big rally Matt held last December, and she encouraged Nkiru and Jack all the while he was witnessing. Kikindo isn’t saved yet, and we are now praying for him and Elisabeth’s husband to get saved. We hope and pray that Nkiru will be able to walk to services on Sunday. It took Jack and I almost 45 fast walking minutes to get home after winning her to Christ—and we never made it to all the villages we were going to walk to.
One last side-note: Jack told me on the way home that Nkiru was the first person he has ever led to Christ (he has preached many times, but this was his first-ever personal soul-winning convert). I’m glad I got to be a part.
To God be the glory!
